art. 1/ introduction, aims and purposes
Science+Fiction - Trieste International Science-Fiction Festival – is a multidisciplinary event devoted to exploring the use of new technologies and experimental languages in film, television and visual arts. The main purpose of Science+Fiction is to represent and promote, in Italy and in the neighbouring countries, the spreading of the “fantastic” production from all over the world, with a special attention for science-fiction and fantasy cinematographic and audio-visual works.

Science+Fiction is organized by the Italian film centre La Cappella Underground. The festival is supported by: Ministry for the Cultural Heritage - DGC, Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, Province of Trieste, Municipality of Trieste, Trieste Chamber of Commerce, University of Trieste. Since 2005 Science+Fiction is an adherent member of the EFFFF – European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation.

Science+Fiction features the following sections:
- international science fiction and fantasy feature films competition;
- méliès d’argent award for best european motion picture from the fantasy genre;
- best european fantastic short selection;
- retrospectives, special programs and life achievement awards;
- premieres and special events;
A selection committee will select and invite the films that wil be screened in competition, outside competition and in the informative sections.
art. 4/ international science-fiction and fantasy feature films competition
The International Competition is reserved to feature films (running time 60 minutes minimum), completed in the 18 months prior to the festival, produced in any format, and belonging to science- fiction and fantasy genres in their broadest sense. All the selected films must be Italian premieres. The competition is only for a director’s first or second feature film. The festival selection committee reserves to itself the right to make exceptions to this clause. All films have to be in their original version (preferably with English or French subtitles) and must have one of the following screening format: 35mm, Digibeta, Beta SP or DVD. The application to the Competition must be presented through the entry form, provided on the website. Proprietors of films wishing to participate in the Competition section are requested to send, by October 9th 2010, a DVD or a VHS copy of the film, together with the synopsis of the film and all suitable information material. Films expressly invited by the selection committee are admitted to the Competition. The festival direction shall appoint an International Jury of at least three members with the task of conferring the Asteroid Award to the best film.
art. 5/ méliès d’argent award for best european motion picture from the fantasy genre
The Méliès d’Argent competition is reserved to European feature films from the fantasy genre. All films have to be qualified as a European Production, according to the rules of the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation. All the selected films must be Italian premieres. All films have to be in their original version (preferably with English or French subtitles) and must have one of the following screening format: 35mm, Digibeta, Beta SP or DVD. The application to the Competition must be presented through the entry form, provided on the website. Proprietors of films wishing to participate in the Competition section are requested to send, by October 9th 2010, a DVD or a VHS copy of the film, together with the synopsis of the film and all suitable information material. Films expressly invited by the selection committee are admitted to the Competition. The festival direction shall appoint a Jury of movie professionals with the task of awarding a Méliès d’Argent to a European film from the program. The same film may be selected at various E.F.F.F.F festivals. However, a film receiving an award at one of the festivals is automatically excluded from competition at the other member festivals (a film can only be awarded one Méliès d’Argent). Each year, an international jury made up of professionals from the movie world, assembles to present the Méliès d’Or award. The deliberation is combined with a public presentation gala. Representatives of each film (directors, actors, producers, etc.) are invited to this presentation. The gala concludes with the official presentation of the Méliès d’Or award.
art. 6/ best european fantastic short selection
Admission to the Best European Fantastic Short Selection is reserved to short films (running time 20 minutes maximum; the selection committee may accept longer films as an exception), completed in the 18 months before the festival, realized in any format, belonging to science-fiction, fantasy, horror and fantastic genres in its broadest sense. All films have to be qualified as a European Production, according to the rules of the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation. All the selected films must be Italian premieres. All films have to be in their original version (preferably with English or French subtitles) and must have one of the following screening format: 35mm, Digibeta, Beta SP, DVD. Application to the Competition must be presented through the entry form provided on the website. Proprietors of films wishing to participate in the Competition section are requested to send, by October 9th 2010, a DVD or a VHS copy of the film, together with the synopsis of the film and all suitable information material. Films expressly invited by the selection committee are admitted to the Competition. The festival direction shall appoint an International Jury of at least three members with the task of conferring to the best film the nomination to the Méliès d’Or Award of the EFFFF (www. melies.org).
art. 7/ entry for the competitions pre-selections
The entry form, fully filled in and signed, shall be dispatched together with the information material and delivered at the organization office by 9th October 2010. There is no application fee. All tapes and DVDs for pre-selection shall be sent with the following wording: “for cultural purposes only, without commercial value”. Non-compliant parcels shall be rejected. Participants shall pay for P&P. All the information material will be kept as part of Science+Fiction archives and will thus not be returned to the senders.
art. 8/ selected films and prints shipment
All films, either admitted to the competitions or invited to the Festival, shall be accompanied by the full documentation comprised of the following:
- full and detailed technical information sheet;
- synopsis and a director’s short statement on the film;
- 10 b/w or colour photographs of film-scenes and a picture of the director (min. resolution of 300 dpi);
- bio-filmography of the director (indicating the original and international titles of previous work);
- full dialogue list both in the original language and translated into English;
- a VHS tape or DVD totally faithful to the copy presented at the festival, for electronic subtitling;
- a Betacam SP tape, containing excerpts (3’ max), chosen by the production, for TV promotion purposes;
- any other possible promotional material (posters, brochures, press kits).
The full documentation must be delivered at the organization office by October 23rd 2010. All copies of the selected films are requested to reach the organization office by October 30th 2010 and shall have in attachment a copy of the entry form indicating the sender’s name, the title, the running time and the format of the film, and the number of reels. At the same time, the sender is requested to send via fax or e-mail the shipping date and code, and in case the air dispatch number. International shipments are requested to carry a label with the following wording: “for cultural purposes only, without commercial value”. Shipments via ordinary mail or courier from non-EU countries shall have in attachment a pro-forma invoice, for a maximum amount of 40 US$ (please do not indicate higher amounts, like production costs!). The Festival organisation shall not pay for custom duties. The Festival organization will not pay any rental fee for films in competition.
art. 9/ freight and insurance costs
The shipping costs of the prints are at the festival’s expenses, except when, on the way back, the print has to be shipped to another Film Festival on request of the producer of the film. The return of the selected films shall be carried out within two weeks from the end of the Festival; copies will be dispatched to the address indicated in the entry form. All films will be covered by an “all risks” insurance policy taken out and entirely paid by the festival. Copies shall be actually insured for the period in which they are available for the Festival, i.e. from delivery to return shipment.
art. 10/ general provisions and challenges
Entry and participation to the Festival shall imply full acceptance of the present regulations and of the entry form. The Festival Direction reserves to itself the right to take final decisions as to any exception not envisaged in the present regulation. The present regulations are laid down both in Italian and in English. In case of interpretation problems, the Italian version shall prevail.
